Share USB Tethering to WiFi and Ethernet Devices

I have an Android with 4G Internet access. I connect it to Ubuntu via a USB cable and enable the USB Tethering in Android. The Ubuntu identify it in “Ethernet Connected” → “Wired connection 2” immediately.

My next step is to share internet from Ubuntu notebook through its built-in Ethernet and WiFi. Here is how.

802.11n 300 Mbps and 802.11ac 867 Mbps Wireless Routers in Real-World Report

Because QNAP Virtualization Station and other services needs more and more bandwidth, I bought a Asus RT-AC1200G+ to replace RT-AC51u and netis WF2190 to upgrade to 802.11ac 867Mbps. Expecting to replace my wired  Gigabit Ethernet.

Things doesn’t go well. I experience random reboots with Asus RT-AC1200G+ but learn the complexity of wireless implement. While working on it, an Edimax engineer give me a hand and send me an Edimax BR-6478AC V2. Dolly from Asus also provides me an unpublic firmware to test. And all the commends on post. Without their help, I couldn’t get my wireless working properly.

Therefore, I decide to write this post to share my real-world experience. It will be update continuously.

Let’s begin from knowing my devices, network map, and placement:

Connect to a Wireless Router from Another Router

I have two computers and a QNAP TS-119PII on my table while my wife has a Lenovo C540 and a TP-Link TL-WR842ND running DD-WRT as our Internet router on another table. They all need to be connected to internet but I don’t want any wire between our tables. I also need a Gigabit Ethernet hub, the build-in Fast Ethernet on TL-WR842ND is too slow.

DD-WRT for my TP-Link TL-WR842ND

My TP-Link TL-WR842ND freeze once or twice a day. It’s not the WAN because I may go online with other ports on FDDI modem. I cannot even login to my TL-WR842ND. Upgrade to the latest firmware doesn’t help, either. After 7 months, I give up and get a new AP.

Until last week, when I try to do more research to see if there is any solution, a YouTube names “TP-link TL-WR740N freezing, no connection until restart” catch my eye. It’s exactly what happen to me. And there are comments TL-WR842ND has the same problem, too. Aidin shadnezhad solve his problem by flash it with DD-WRT firmware.

Here comes the solution!
